Research Question:
What Way Would Mentoring Help Liberian Disadvantaged Youths To
Become Good Citizens And Contribute To Their Community?”
I find addressing an issue very fascinating especially related to social change in
nonprofit management and leadership, so I would like my capstone to be about a
qualitative study in “What Way Mentoring Would Help Liberian Disadvantaged
Youths To Become Good Citizens And Contribute To Their Community?” Besides
undergoing physical, emotional, and cognitive changes, they are confronted with
serious challenges. The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of
disadvantaged youths in Liberian schools. The qualitative phenomenological
method will be used to guide this study. The youths in post-conflict Liberia are
faced with many challenges, a country along the coast of western Africa and is the
only state in Africa never been subjected to colonial rule. Liberia has a lot of
chronological history and is Africa’s oldest republic which was founded by the
American Colonization Society for the freed U.S. slaves in 1821.The capital city is
Monrovia and obtained its independence in 1847. The country enjoyed relative
stability until a rebellion in 1989 escalated into a destructive civil war in the 1990s
that did not fully cease until 2003 Britannica.com (n.d.). Due to the civil crisis,
many adolescents face difficult challenges in Liberia. A few studies have evaluated
the effectiveness of brief educational interventions to increase resiliency among
children in post-conflict settings. A primary analysis of the quantitative data found
that key informants’ perceptions of the mental health needs of young people in
Liberia are consistent with research on the harmful effects of war, violence, and
displacement on child and adolescent populations. Youth were perceived to be
experiencing significant adverse emotional, behavioral, and functional outcomes
related to exposure to war and its aftermath. Appropriate treatment settings to
target these issues were identified (Levey, Borba, et al., 2013). Besides undergoing
physical, emotional, and cognitive 3 changes, “The Liberian Disadvantaged
Youths” are confronted with serious social and academic problems. Applying a
social justice lens to youth mentoring involves careful consideration of the unique
backgrounds and experiences that mentors and proteges bring to the mentoring
relationship (Albright, Hurd, et al., Applying a social justice lens to youth
mentoring: A review of the literature and recommendations for practice 2017). The
basis for expecting positive mentoring relationships can modify youths’
perceptions of other relationships is derived largely from attachment theory, which
2
theorizes that children construct cognitive representations of relationships through
their early experiences be fostered by the ability of the youth to enter into a secure,
trusting relationship, as well as a growing capacity to understand the world from
the perspective of others (Raposa, Rhodes, et al., 2019
